Master The Agentic Era of AI

Weekly #118 | If You've Played Strategy Games, You Can Master the AI Agentic Era

Welcome to the "Agentic Era"— a time when Artificial Intelligence (AI) isn’t just about automation or flashy gadgets, but about something far more practical and “revolutionary.” It’s the dawn of AI as an extension of ourselves, acting as our agents. For micropreneurs, this cultural shift offers immense possibilities—if you’re ready to adapt.

The Significance of the "Agentic Era" & Slack’s Positioning

The term “Agentic Era” is more than just a label; it signals a shift in how we interact with technology. We’re moving beyond the era of AI as a mere tool to AI as an active participant in our daily tasks. Instead of viewing AI as something separate, we now see it as an agent—working on our behalf, handling tasks, and even making decisions. This shift is critical for micropreneurs, who are often juggling multiple roles and responsibilities.

At the recent Dreamforce event, Slack made a bold announcement: they’re positioning themselves as the leading conversational interface for agentic interactions. This isn’t Slack’s first rodeo with automation—they experimented with bots before, but those early attempts didn’t quite hit the mark. The bots were clunky, the conversations stilted, and users quickly tuned them out. But now, with advanced AI, Slack seems to be back in the game, ready to lead the charge in this new era.

For micropreneurs, this development is crucial. Slack’s innovations are setting the stage for how we’ll communicate with our AI agents, making it easier to integrate these tools into our daily workflows.

What Micropreneurs Can Learn from Strategy Games

AI agents enable you to do more with less, but this advantage requires a new mindset. The days of handling every task yourself are fading. Instead, you’ll need to focus on orchestrating your AI agents—think of yourself as a conductor, guiding an orchestra of digital tools. This shift demands a different skill set—one that blends managerial acumen with a deep understanding of AI capabilities.

If you’ve ever played a strategy game like Sid Meier’s Civilization (pictured above), you may already be familiar with managing “AI agents.” In these games, you command units, make strategic decisions, and outmaneuver AI opponents. It’s fun, it’s engaging, and it doesn’t feel like work. But now, these game mechanics are more relevant than ever as we transition into the Agentic Era. The principles of game theory, once confined to gaming, are now making their way into business strategies.

This means that if you’re good at strategy games, you’re already ahead of the curve. You have the skills needed to thrive in this new era—skills that translate directly from the digital world to the professional one.

Building Your Micro-Empire with Game Strategies

So, how can this help you with your micro-empire? Start by revisiting the strategy games you’ve played. My personal favorite is Civilization, and with the next edition, Civilization VII, set to release in 2025, there’s no better time to dust off those skills. Map your gameplay strategies to your career or business. You’ll start to see patterns—similarities between how you conquer in-game challenges and how you handle real-world obstacles.

Next, leverage tools like ChatGPT or any Large Language Model (LLM) of your choice. Use them to translate game terminology into business contexts. You’ll find that the tactics you used to win in games can be applied to your business. Analyze your gameplay, see if you’ve been using those strategies in your work, and adjust as needed.

For one of my ventures, Faiā, we’ve embraced this approach by creating our own version of Civilization's Civilopedia—we call it "Faiāopedia." It’s a bit geeky, sure, but it’s incredibly practical (and fun). It’s our way of embedding this cultural shift into our operations and staying ahead in the Agentic Era.

Micromanagement: The New Power Skill

Finally, let’s talk about micromanagement. I know, the word often comes with negative connotations, but in the Agentic Era, micromanagement could become your superpower. Just like in strategy games, where every decision matters, micromanaging your AI agents—ensuring they’re optimized and aligned with your goals—will be key to your success.

Influencers like Riley Brown are leading by example by recording and sharing their progress with tools like Cursor, Claude, and Replit. So you can learn directly. Very similar behaviors to gamers who already livestream their “gameplay” online. The battle for dominance in the AI tool landscape is still ongoing, and terms like "Software Composer" are becoming part of the vernacular, signaling the evolving role of AI in our lives.

So, micropreneurs, it’s time to embrace this new era. Hone your coordination and management skills, and don’t shy away from micromanagement. In the Agentic Era, these are the skills that will help you lead your AI agents—and your micro-empire—to new heights.
